Love Yourself Too Much?

Interesting theory, called the Narcissism Epidemic.

Apparently too many people are too much in love with themselves (read: full of their own nonsense).

“At the end of the day I love me and I don’t think that’s wrong,” says Sharise Tucker, a 21-year-old senior at Southern Connecticut State, a self-professed narcissist. “I don’t think it’s a problem, having most people love themselves. I love me.”

So what’s so bad about loving yourself? The authors believes that

…all that narcissism is a problem that can range from the discourteous [such as] playing dance music until 3 a.m…. To the disastrous-failed marriages, abusive working environments and billion-dollar Ponzi schemes.

In a nutshell

…the flip side of all that confidence isn’t prodigious success but antisocial behavior.

In Islamic Terms

Islam teaches to love each other. In essence, there’s nothing wrong with loving yourself. However, the by-product of over-loving oneself is being so full of it and not even realizing it. Especially when wrong is committed and one has sinned, it is timely that we all should be constantly reminded to remain humble.

“And turn not Your face away from men with [false] pride, nor walk in insolence on earth. Verily, Allâh likes not each arrogant boaster. And be moderate (or show no insolence) in Your walking, and lower Your voice. Verily, the harshest of All voices is the voice (braying) of the ass.” (Luqmaan:18-19)

“And walk not on the earth with conceit and arrogance. Verily, You can neither rend nor penetrate the earth, nor can You attain a stature like the mountains in height.” (al-Israa’:37)

And in the end, we’ll all be accountable for our deeds.

“All that They do is noted in (their) Books (of deeds). Every matter, small and great, is on record.” (al-Qamar:52-53)
